Career highlights

  • World Champion since 2024
  • Youngest undisputed World Champion in history, at 18
  • One of the youngest players ever to surpass 2750 rating

Early Life

Dommaraju Gukesh was born in Chennai, India, in 2006 — the same city that produced Viswanathan Anand. Inspired by Anand’s example and supported by considerable sacrifices from his family, he devoted himself to chess from an early age and became a grandmaster at just twelve, one of the youngest in history.

Rise to the Top

Gukesh’s ascent was meteoric. He became one of the youngest players ever to cross a 2750 rating and led the strong Indian team at the Chess Olympiad. In 2024 he won the Candidates Tournament, earning the right to challenge for the world title while still a teenager.

World Champion

The youngest champion ever

In 2024 Gukesh faced the reigning champion Ding Liren. In a tense, closely fought match he seized his chance in the final game to win the title at the age of eighteen — the youngest undisputed World Champion in the history of chess, breaking a record that had stood since Garry Kasparov’s day.

Playing Style

Gukesh combines fearless ambition with deep, modern preparation. He is willing to play long, demanding games and to push for a win where others would settle, backing his calculation and endurance against any opponent. His maturity under pressure, displayed throughout his title run, belies his youth.

Legacy

Though his story is only beginning, Gukesh already stands as a symbol of the explosive rise of Indian chess, alongside contemporaries such as Arjun Erigaisi and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. As the youngest champion ever, he represents a genuine generational shift at the summit of the game, and his reign may shape its direction for years to come.
